Located in the northern end of Feng Xian and adjacent to Huang Pu River, Shanghai Comprehensive Industrial Development Zone was known as Shanghai Feng Pu Industrial Area in the past, 30 miles away from the central city and Hong Qiao International Airport, and 60 minutes from Pu Dong International Airport and Shanghai Yang Shan Deep-Water Seaport. Established in August, 1995, it is one of the nine major municipal industrial areas. In April 2000, Shanghai Comprehensive Industrial Development Zone, which is Shanghai Industrial Investment (Group) Limited Corporation holding development area under Shanghai Economic Committee, was singled out to be the only Comprehensive industrial development zone in Shanghai. On March 10, 2003, the national export processing zone approved by the State Council officially started to operate.
 
Currently, the total planning area of Distrct A of the development zone during the first phase is 18.8 square kilometers, with the eastern end Metro Line 4, the southern end Pu Dong Canal, the northern end Da Ye Road and the western Zhu Harbour. Of the total area, a 5-square-kilometer residential complex, a 5-square-kilometer industrial park and Shanghai Min Hang Export Processing Zone of 1.9 square kilometers have been checked and accepted; the preliminary planning of China Pu Tian Industrial Park of 1,700 mu has been made while the development of 2-square-kilometer real estates along the river and the 1.1-square-kilometer processing zone over the second phase is ready to get off the ground. Electronic information industry, electric transmission equipment industry, biopharmaceuticals and mechanical equipment industry are the four pillar industries. The world top 500 enterprise and domestic and foreign enterprises with representative projects include Pioneer High-tech, Panasonic Electric Industrial Co., Ltd.,, Fuji Electronics, Hino Engine, GE, Bacardi, NuSKin, SGL CARBON GROUP, Imaje Marking, Paraske, Geluoli Pharmacy, Putian Information Industry, SL-Power, China Shining TCL, Shaghai Zhezhong Electronics, Nanqiao Transformer, Shanghai Lei Yun-Shang Parmaceutical Co., Ltd. and Shanghai Xing Ling Parmaceutical Co., Ltd. By the end of 2003, there have been 70 foreign-funded enterprises with a total investment of 534 million dollars, 45 domestic-funded industrial enterprises with a total investment of 2.786 billion yuan and 357 registered enterprises with a total registration capital of 1.509 billon yuan.
 
In the modern residential park, there are "Six Vertical Four Horizontal" road network, with East Huancheng Road and Feng Pu Road the main roads, and there are a group of villas and residential complexes such as Feng Pu Yuan and Jiu Hue Yuan. There is also a kindergarten, a school, a secondary specialized school and a junior college. The landscape project of building a 617-mu “Four seasons Ecological Garden” is well on the way. The greening rate of the residential park has exceeded 40% and the amount of dust fall is one-tenth that of the central city. Great efforts are being made to make it Shanghai Garden District of 2004. The picture of a modern industrial park with the blue sky, clean water, green land and residents looms day by day.
 
During the second phase, District A is to be extended westward to promote the development of Zhuang Hang Town and Nan Qiao Town. The planning area of it is 12.38 square kilometers with the eastern end Zhu Harbour, western end Ju Chao Port, southern end Pu Dong canal and northern end Gao Ya Corridor. The planning and designing is of high starting point, high level and high quality. An intensive preparation is being made for the early stage of the development and construction. The planning and designing of District B is still in process.
 
The implementation of the economic layout measure “Marching Eastward and Westward” by Shanghai municipal government makes South Shanghai a major target of strategic layout and strategic shift. A huge amount of infrastructure is in South Shanghai and the industry belt of South Shanghai is taking shape, so Shanghai Comprehensive Industrial Development Zone which is in the heart of South Shanghai will soon become a key gathering place and output place of the Feng Xian’s industrial economy as well as important manufacturing base for modern industries in South Shanghai.
