The original Min Hang District belonged to Shanghai County, which had a history of more than 4,000 years. In September 26 1992 the State Council of Chinese Government decided to withdraw the two original government administrative system, Shanghai County and MinHang District, and, instead, putting them together to establish a new government administrative mechanism - New Min Hang District. The District Government locates in Xin Zhuang Township. 

New Min Hang District locates at Southeast front of Yangtze River Delta. Going through the abdomen area, southwest area at the center of Shanghai, it forms a shape as a "key", including Hong Qiao International Airport and Min Hang Economic Development Area. Connecting with Xuhui District, Pudong New Area, Nanhui District on its east; Fengxian District on its south crossing the Huangpu River; Songjiang District, Qingpu District on its West, the total area of the New MinHang District reaches 371.68 square kilometers. It covers 5.86% of total area of Shanghai. The area is rich with water and fertility soil. The average altitude is 4 meters.
