Luwan District, one of' the central districts in Shanghai, border upon Huangpu District, Jing'an District and Xuhui District. It's separated from Pudong New Area by Huangpu River. With a registered population of 326,000,it covers an area of 8.03 sqkm, including 7.54 sqknr of land and 0.49 sqkm of water area. 

Luwan District is one of the business and commercial centers in Shanghai with its convenient traffic, plenty of cultural sights, elegant living surroundings and prosperous business. Huaihai Road is known to the world for its rich flavor of European styles and typical foreign commerce culture; Xintiandi becomes a new sight of Luwan Shanghai for its fashion and entertainment in the 21 century. 

The history of Luwan District dates back to 751 AD (Tianbao 10th Year in Tang Dynasty). In 1945, the west of this district was called Lujiawan District, which was renamed as Luwan District in 1950. 

With the settlement of Jiangnan Manufacture General Factory and the expansion of French Concession, Luwan District began its urbanization~ in 1867, Jiangnan Manufacture General Factory moved in to the area along the river, which was a crucial move in the modern Chinese industry history. The first lathe, first warship, first molten steel and numerous others numbering the first in China were born here. In 1900, the north of this area was separated as French Concession. Many French and Russian people swarmed in, and the Concession began to expand on a large scale with thriving business of building roads, houses, shops and schools, thus forming a quiet and elegant area with foreign characteristics. Ever since then Luwan district Features lofty and elegant human habitat for business and commerce and comfort living as well as constellation of professionals. 

In the early 20th century, many modern revolutionists and innovators gathered here and left more than 100 revolution history relics in which there are the well-known Site of the First National Congress of Chinese Communist Party, Sun Yatsen's Former Residence, Site of the Central Department of Chinese Social Youth League, Residence of Mr. Zhou, Memorial of Zou Taofen and so on.

Luwan is the commerce center of' Shanghai as metropolitan city. The commerce streets along Huaihai Road traverse the northern area, which are the soul of Luwan District as well as the symbol of Shanghai's grace and prosperity. The early Huaihai Road was known as the Oriental Paris for its high-class and elegant stores. The World Expo will be held in Shanghai, China in 2010. It will bring historic developing opportunities for Luwan as the venue of Expo2010.
