Jiading is a famous science and technology city.

As early as in 1958, Shanghai Municipal People’s Government had identified Jiading as a science satellite city. More 10 scientific research institutes, colleges and universities, such as Institute of Nuclear Research, Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, Institute of Silicate, East China Computation Institute and Institute of Laser Plasma under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai University, Shanghai Science and Technology Management Cadres College and Shanghai College of Science and Technology, have settled in Jiading and gather more than 6,000 teaching and scientific research talents with middle and senior professional titles (including state-level science and technology elites). Since the 1990s, Jiading has persisted in implementing the strategy of “developing the district through science and education” and established Shanghai Jiading Private Science & Technology Intensive Park with Shanghai Science & Technology Commission in Jiading Industrial Zone (a municipal-level industrial zone) in 1993. Since its founding, the Park has always aimed at promoting the translation of scientific and technological achievements into productive forces and optimizing Jiading’s industrial structure and actively absorbed and incubated domestic and foreign high-tech enterprises and projects, gradually developing into a new highland where Jiading develops its high and new technology industries. In 1995, this Park was identified by Shanghai Municipal Government as one of the “1 zone, 6 parks” for developing high and new technology industries in Shanghai. In 1998, it was upgraded to be a state-level high-tech park upon ratification of the Ministry of Science and Technology. In July 2001, as an important part of the high-tech development zones in Shanghai, the Park was identified as one of the second group of China APEC science and technology parks with the joint approval of the Ministry of Science and Technology and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, thus creating a more favorable environment for it to strengthen the liaison with the science parks around the world and quicken its development.

Jiading is also a famous automobile city.

The first car produced in China Mainland was produced at Anting Town, Jiading. Located at Anting Town, Jiading, Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive Company Ltd. is one top-notch auto manufacturer in our country. Its Santana cars are sold well throughout China and have a very high reputation. A big number of auto parts manufacturing enterprises providing parts for Volkswagen have become the key enterprises in Jiading District and have a very strong productive capacity. Besides, to further develop the auto industry, we are now losing no time in preparing to build Shanghai International Automobile City with such functions as auto production, exhibition, sales, service and F1 racing car, so as to make the auto industry a very strong industry of our district.
