Hongkou District is situated by the northeast of downtown Shanghai, bordering on Yangpu District on the east, Zhabei District on the west, Pudong New Area and Huangpu District across the Huangpu River and Wusong Creek (Suzhou Creek) to the south, and Baoshan District on the north. The district covers an area of 23.46 square kilometers, extending some 7.8 kilometers north south and about 3.8 kilometers east west, and a registered population of 784,000, with 10 subdistricts under its jurisdiction. The seat of the District People’s Government is at 518 Feihong Road.
Located where land and water meet, Hongkou District is convenient in transportation. Complete with Metro Line 3 and 4 as well as traffic arteries such as Sichuan Road (N), Wusong Road, Siping Road, Dalian Road (W), the Inner and Outer Ring roads, it’s easy to get around from Hongkou to many other districts in Shanghai. During the 11th “Five-Years-Plan” period, the Metro Line 8 and 10 and the Hongkou Football Stadium Transportation Hub Project will be done to further ease traffic. The Hongkou Football Stadium Transportation Hub Project will integrate transport functions with the development of service industries, which is destined to make Hongkou a key link in the future development of such industries in Shanghai.
With its convenient traffic and superior geography position, the district is a central urban area with integrates functions of commerce, shopping, and urban residence. Hongkou District has profound cultural heritage of 72 human cultural sights. Area around Shanyin Road is particularly famous for being the former residences of many famous modern Chinese intellectuals.
