Shanghai Multimedia Industry Association

  Shanghai Multimedia Industry Association (SMIA) is one of the 12 new associations for newly emerged industries founded in Shanghai following China’s admission into the WTO. It is a non-profit social organization founded by businesses of multiple forms of ownership and individuals that are engaged in multimedia production, manufacturing, research and related business operation, on a voluntary basis.

  Currently, SMIA has established relations with some 10 overseas counterparts, in addition to keeping close touch with the professional teams and media groups at home. The business members of SMIA now number 140, including the leading enterprises in the sections of computer graphics(CG), online games, digital animation, broadband VOD, educational courseware development, multimedia hardware manufacturing. The key companies in the digital animation sector include Shanghai Huanwei Digital Video & Film Co., Ltd., Institute of Digital Media Technology (Shanghai) Limited(IDMT), Crystal Digital Technology Co., Ltd; and the leading on-line games companies include Epic Games(China), Take2_2k Games China, www.9you.com, and www.the9.com, which all have extensive influence industry-wide.

  Ever since 2002, SMIA has been trying to promote domestic and international projects, forge a cooperation platform for businesses in the industry and serve the development of the industry by organizing an array of 11 major events, including 3 sessions of China (Shanghai) International Multimedia Technology and Application Expo & Symposium, 5 multimedia creation CG competitions, China International Multimedia Forum 2003, Creator’s Festival, and World Multimedia Development Trend Forum. As one of the best known organizations for the multimedia industry, it has also helped build the multimedia public service platform for Shanghai, initiated the training program for urgently needed multimedia personnel, which has given training to some 8,000 people, organized more than 110 international exchange activities, provided members with indirect services in 1300 separate cases, and completed the drafting of 3 relevant reports.
