Shanghai Banking Association is a non-profitable and non-governmental industry organization, established in Dec. 1992, with the authorization of People’s Bank of China Shanghai Branch and Shanghai Non-Governmental-Organization Administration Bureau, comprising of banking institutions or non-banking institutions registered within the jurisdiction of Shanghai as members entering on a voluntary basis.

   Till now, Shanghai Banking Association has 111 members, including 80 member banks and 31 quasi member banks. Among the 80 member banks, there are 23 domestic member banks and 57 foreign member banks.

   The principle of the Shanghai Banking Association is to abide by the Constitution of People’s Republic of China, Law of People’s Republic of China on Banking Supervision and Management, Law of People’s Republic of China on People’s Bank of China, Law of People’s Republic of China on Commercial Bank, Guidelines on the Work of China Association of Banks, and other relevant rules and regulations, and economic and financial policies; and to strengthen self-disciplining mechanism, maintain common interests of member banks, stimulate business coordination, enhance information exchange, so as to facilitate the healthy development of Shanghai banking industry , and to realize the common interests of member banks.

   Four Professional Working Groups have been established under the Board of Director of Shanghai Banking Association, which are Business Regulation and Coordination Working Group, Information and Training Working Group, Bank Card Working Group and Creditor’s Right Protection Working Group. In the course of open-up, reform and development of Shanghai banking industry, Shanghai Banking Association has played an active role in Self-discipline, protection of creditor’s rights, business coordination and service. Through the monthly newsletter, named Shanghai Banking Correspondence, provides a wide range of financial information to member banks. Each year, many topic seminars, conferences and training classes are organized. 

  In recent years, Shanghai Banking Association has done the work in enacting Self-disciplining Convention of Shanghai Banking Association, Creditors Right Protection Convention of Shanghai Banking Association, Guidelines on Further Strengthening of Control on Individual House Loan, Implementation Measures For the Banking Sector's Sanction Against the Bad Real Estate Agents, and the Convention on Syndicated loan; in making research on market competition status, to regulate the market competition; in organizing of training programs to improve the quality of banking staff; in establishing long-term communications mechanism with the Customers Right Protection Commission, so as to protect the rights of financial consumers; in promoting of financial knowledge to the public , so as to raise the risk awareness and credit worthiness awareness of the public; in enhancing cooperation and information exchange among banking sectors in the Yangtze River Delta, so as to forge a sound financial environment, create a harmonious society and make contributions to building up Shanghai into the international finance center.
